🇮🇹 IL BAGLIO

La parola “baglio” deriva dal francese antico bail(e), che significa cortile. Il termine indica un tipo di edilizia rurale, diffusa in Sicilia dal XVI secolo per l’alloggio e la difesa dei contadini.
Nel territorio marsalese, dalla fine del Settecento, quando inizia la lavorazione del vino Marsala in queste strutture rurali, che vengono acquistate o appositamente costruite dai commercianti inglesi Woodhouse ed Ingham, il “bagghiu” si identifica con lo stabilimento vinicolo. A partire dall’Ottocento, gli stabilimenti vinicoli sorgono nella periferia della città, in prossimità del porto e del mare, come nel caso del Baglio Anselmi.
L’azienda vinicola “Anselmi” fu fondata nel 1874 dalla famiglia Anselmi, cui apparteneva il patriota Ludovico Anselmi Correale.
Lo stabilimento, come si vede nell’illustrazione, aveva un ampio cortile con grandi magazzini su due lati per l’invecchiamento del vino e la distillazione dell’alcool puro e inoltre un’officina meccanica per la produzione delle botti. Gli alloggi dei proprietari erano al piano “nobile”, sopra il portale di ingresso ad arco, che dominava la facciata, fiancheggiato da due elementi aggettanti, simili a torri.

🇬🇧 THE “BAGLIO”

The word “baglio” comes from the Old French bail(e), meaning a courtyard, a term probably introduced to Sicily in the Norman period. It generally indicates a kind of rural building widespread in Sicily from the XVI century onwards, used far the accommodation and protection of farm workers.
In the territory of Marsala the “bagghiu” (Sicilian dialect) has been identified with winemaking since the end of the eighteenth century, when the production of Marsala wine began in these rural structures, which were purchased or specially built by the British merchants Woodhouse and Ingham. Since the nineteenth century, the wineries like Baglio Anselmi have been situated on the outskirts of the city, near the port and the sea.
The “Anselmi” winery was founded in 1874 by the Anselmi family, to which the famous patriot Ludovico Anselmi Correale belonged.
The building, as shown in the drawing, had a spacious courtyard with large storerooms on two sides far the aging of the wine and far the distillation of pure alcohol and also a workshop far the production of barrels. The accommodation of the owners was on the “noble floor “, above the arched entrance portal, which is flanked by two tower-like projecting elements.
